Ash is a runaway elven noblewoman and the last known wielder of ash magic, a forbidden art believed to be extinct. For three years, she has survived in hiding among the slums of the border city Greyhollow, keeping her head down and her power buried.

When a rebel sabotage mission goes wrong, Ash is forced to reveal her magic to save Echo, the formidable commander of the local resistance cell. Echo quickly realises that Ash’s abilities may be the key to understanding the Empire’s newest and most terrifying weapon: the Wraiths—shadowy creatures that devour human emotion and leave their victims hollow and broken.

Bound by necessity, Ash and Echo strike a fragile bargain. Ash will aid the rebellion in exchange for protection—and a chance to strike back at the Empire that destroyed her family.
